Sonamarg, Kashmir
Sonamarg literally means "meadow of gold", and with snow-capped mountains set against a spectacular blue sky, it is as close to heaven as it can get. It is situated in the Kashmir valley, at an altitude of 2,730 metres (8,960 ft). Combined with the alpine meadows that bloom in the summer as well as rivers and lakes stocked with fish, Sonamarg is a mesmerizing hill station and a very popular tourist destination in Kashmir.
Sonamarg provides glaciers like Kolahoi Peak & trekking routes leading to Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gangabal Lake and Gadsar Lake in the Himalayas, which are stocked with snow-trout and brown-trout. The Sind River meanders here and abounds with Trout and Mahseer.
Sonmarg is a trekker's heaven and has adventurous routes with beautiful green water and frozen lakes around. The vale is believed to be bestowed with mystical water which turns everything into eternal riches. High altitude makes it cold even during summers.
An exciting location for trek lovers, Thajiwas Glacier, situated just 3km away from Sonamarg is one of the most thrilling and striking experiences to witness. The glacier is quite popular among tourists for its exciting activities like sledding, hiking, and pony rides. Sonamarg is also the take off station for a drive to Ladakh across Zojila, a major pass in the Great Himalayan Range.
The Jammu and Kashmir tourism department organizes river rafting tournaments at Sonamarg throughout the year, which has recently seen the participation of teams from abroad.
