Doodhpathri, Kashmir
Doodhpathri, in Kashmiri language means "Valley of Milk" or "Milky meadow". In Kashmiri folklore, it is a legend that the famous poet, preacher and revered saint of Kashmir, "Sheikh-ul-Aalam" Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (Nund Rishi), has prayed here, and once, when he was in search of water in the meadows to perform ablution for offering prayers, he pricked the ground with his stick to search for water, and milk came out. He told the milk that it could only be used for drinking and not for ablution. Hearing this, milk changed its state to water and began flowing across the meadows, giving the area its name. The more plausible explanation is that the gushing waters of Doodhpathri have a milky-white appearance and the region has always remained rich in milk production.
Doodhpathri lies in a bowl shaped valley in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, at an altitude of 2,730 metres (8,960 ft) above sea level. The alpine valley landscape of Doodhpathri consists of vast grassy slopes dotted with colourful wildflowers surrounded by snow-clad mountains. The meadows are covered with pine, fir and deodar forests. During winters, the entire area is blanketed under snow. In spring and summer, wildflowers like daisies, forget-me-nots, and buttercups bloom across the meadows. The gushing milky-white waters of Doodhpathri remain very cold throughout the year, and are believed to possess miraculous healing properties.
The ethereal beauty of Doodhpathri is magnified manifold during the early hours of the day. Watching the first rays of sunshine fall upon the snow-capped peaks as mist floats through the valley is truly a breathtaking sight. Silence engulfs the meadows, broken occasionally by birdsong. The valley is home to many Himalayan bird species like the Himalayan Monal, Golden Oriole and Kashmir Flycatcher. The cool morning breeze, the scent of pine forests, and the crunching sound of boots over fresh snow make it a deeply rejuvenating experience. When covered under a blanket of pristine white snow during winters, Doodhpathri transforms into a snowy paradise for activities like skiing and snowboarding.
While Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg are more widely visited places by tourists and locals alike, Doodhpathri has retained an aura of untouched purity and serenity. For those seeking quietude amid nature, Doodhpathri offers immersive relaxation far away from the crowds. Spending a few days here provides a perfect antidote to the frenzy of urban life. Overall, Doodhpathri offers scenic natural beauty, rich bio-diversity, cultural heritage and adventures to suit diverse tourist interests throughout the year.
