Gulmarg, Kashmir

Gulmarg means "a meadow of flowers." It is a compound word or portmanteau of two Persian words: "Gul" (meaning flowers) and "Marg" (meaning meadow). The credit for discovering the charms of Gulmarg first time in history has been given to Yousuf Shah Chak, the last Chak ruler who reigned Kashmir from 1579 to 1586 AD.

One of the main attractions in Gulmarg is the Gulmarg Gondola. Built by a French company Pomagalski, the Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest cable car in the world reaching 3,979 metres. The two-stage ropeway ferries about 600 people every hour between Gulmarg and a shoulder of nearby Apharwat Peak (4,200 metres (13,800 ft)). The Gulmarg Gandola ride is a must do adventure for every visitor as the views from the gondola are simply breathtaking, and the experience is truly unique.

Gulmarg is the "heartland of winter sports in India." It was ranked by CNN as Asia's seventh best ski destination. Winter sports like skiing, tobogganing, snowboarding and heli-skiing take place on the slopes of Mount Apharwat reachable by a Gondola lift. The natural meadows of Gulmarg at an altitude of 2,650 metres are also home to one of the world's highest green golf courses.
