Pahalgam, Kashmir

Pahalgam translates to "village of shepherds." The name is derived from two Kashmiri words: Puheyl (meaning shepherd) and goam (meaning village). Over the time Puheylgoam became Pahalgam. The place acts as a gateway to many meadows & pastures, and traditional Bakharwal communities settle here from spring season to pre-winter, herding their cattle.

The lush green meadows and pristine waters of Pahalgam attract thousands of tourists from all over the world each year. Baisaran Valley, barely 5 kilometres from Pahalgam in Kashmir's Anantnag district, is a popular tourist attraction that has been dubbed "mini-Switzerland" due to its scenic splendour. It's a verdant meadow on a mountaintop flanked by snowcapped mountains and studded with thick pine woods.

The popular Hajan Valley is located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Pahalgam. The valley (also known as Betaab Valley) got its name from a Bollywood movie 'Betaab' that was shot here. The valley is surrounded by lush green meadows and snow clad mountains. The crystal clear chilly water of the stream bubbling down these snowy hills is a breathtaking sight to experience.

The Aru Valley, noted for its scenic meadows, lakes and mountains is located around 12 km from Pahalgam. The village is a base camp for trekkers to the Kolahoi Glacier, the Tarsar - Marsar lakes and the Katrinag valley. It is also a base for the treks to Lidderwat, the Vishansar - Krishansar lakes and Kangan. There are about 20 alpine lakes, peaks and meadows around the Aru Valley. In the winters, when Aru receives heavy snowfall, skiing and heliskiing are practiced. Other tourist activities include fishing of trout in the Lidder river, trekking, hiking, horse riding, sightseeing and photography.

Pahalgam has a scenic 18-hole golf course where championships are organized by the state government and private hotels in summer. Pahalgam Golf Course, also known as Lidder Valley Golf Course, is approximately 100km from Srinagar at about 2,400 meters above sea level. Its picturesque setting makes it known for its unique features. Visiting golfers are left spellbound by the spectacular beauty of the course surrounded by alpine vegetation in a backdrop of snowcapped Himalayas.

A favourite with the filmmakers for its picturesque setting against the backdrop of Lidder River, Pahalgam’s lush valleys, colourful meadows and snow-kissed mountains look like a scene straight out of a beautiful painting. The stunning tourist attractions and delightful climate of Pahalgam attract a crazy number of tourists every year.
